Is onóir dom freastal a dhéanmh oraibh agus táim chun leanúint ar aghaidh ag obair go cruaidh ar bhúr son chun a chinntiú go dtabharfar cluas le h-éisteacht do bhúr bhfadhbanna agus na cúraimí atá tábhachtach díbh.
It is indeed a great honour for me to have been chosen by you, the people of Kerry South to serve you in Dáil Éireann. I will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of Kerry South and will strive to make a real and lasting difference to the welfare and well-being of the people of this constituency.
As a Minister I promised you that I would use my place at the Cabinet to fight tirelessly for Kerry, and particularly for my constituency. I make no apology for that. The fruits of our economic success must be shared equally. Keeping Kerry at the heart of Government has meant that we have been able to make a significant contribution to the promotion, encouragement and enhancement of Kerry life. Throughout that time I was delighted to have been in a position to oversee major improvements to the infrastructure of Kerry.
As your T.D. in Kerry South it is my privilege to serve you. Over the years we have created opportunities and faced challenges together. Working side by side we have overcome the challenges and developed the opportunities in order to make Ireland a better place for our children.
You know I’m a straight talker and today there’s no doubt that our country has been hit by the economic downturn. Unemployment is unacceptably high. People have faced severe budgets. Mothers and fathers are concerned for their children’s future. Businesses are under pressure. Now is not a time for politics as usual.
Ireland’s national finances must be restored in order to stimulate growth and create jobs locally. Our recovery plan is based on reality, unlike the empty and unaffordable policies put forward by others. Now is a time for politicians who are focused on trying to solve these problems, not ones who are focused on trying to exploit them for political gain.
I have never offered you promises that I can’t deliver on. My work in Kerry South can be seen and experienced in every community within the constituency. I offer my total commitment, hard work, competence and integrity to you and I will continue to fight so that Kerry South is a place where our children can live, work and prosper.
This is the fight that I have undertaken throughout my political life and I promise you this, I will work tirelessly to attract public and private investment into the county. We have potential in many areas such as farming, fisheries, forestry, IT, tourism and renewable energy and we must build on them.
You need a politician who can influence, persuade and make a compelling argument for you at the highest levels. This is what I have done in the past. This is what I do now. This is what I will do in the future.
Together we will come through these difficult times.
